I think Mr. Garrow told them Old Line road was no good and that they needed to go back the way they had come was because he didn't want them to discover whatever Georgie had discovered. Georgie said at the beginning of the chapter, she wonders how many significant decisions in history had been made because of mosquitoes. So whatever she discovered has to be important and lead to a clue about Agatha.
